Performing professional service is an effective strategy for career development, serving as a powerful networking tool and a significant CV builder. Engaging in activities such as serving as a reviewer, serving on organizational committees, or volunteering for professional associations provides evidence of your expertise and leadership, often leading to increased visibility in your field. The registration and event dates for service opportunities are announced through the postdoctoral listserv.

Member of the Postdoctoral Association (PDA) Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is the main governing body of the Texas A&M PDA. Serving on the PDA Executive Committee involves leading, advocating for, and supporting our postdoctoral community. Members attend regular meetings and serve as liaisons between postdocs and administration, addressing issues related to the postdoc experience.

Office of Undergraduate Research Collaborations

In collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Research, the following service opportunities are available for postdoctoral scholars.

Reviewer for the Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) Thesis Program

The Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) thesis program offers undergraduates the opportunity to engage in independent research, scholarly inquiry, and creative work under the mentorship of a Texas A&M faculty mentor.

Serving as Proposal Reviewer is a two-step process:

Step 1

Each registered reviewer must participate in the workshop “Introduction to Proposal Review” focused on NSF, NIH, and private foundation proposals as well as specific training for reviewing URS proposals. Completion of the workshop will earn you a certificate in proposal review.

Step 2

Each certified reviewer will have the opportunity to review URS thesis proposals during the application review process in late-summer through early Fall semester. Proposal Reviewers offer critical written feedback to undergraduate students as they begin working on their year-long project.

Active Listener for the Undergraduate Research Scholars Symposium

URS Symposium takes place in the Spring semester. Active Listeners attend oral talks and poster presentations, offering constructive feedback to students as they practice presenting their research. A formal recognition letter will acknowledge your participation in this activity.

Reviewer for Explorations – The Texas A&M Undergraduate Journal

Explorations: The Texas A&M Undergraduate Journal is a student-led, interdisciplinary publication that celebrates the original research and creative work of Aggie undergraduates from every discipline – from engineering and biology to art, history, and performance. The journal encourages experienced postdoctoral researchers to serve as Submission Reviewers in early Spring semester to assist in the formal review and selection of submissions for potential publication. Reviewers play a critical role in ensuring the quality, clarity, and rigor of the journal by evaluating student submissions and providing constructive feedback to both prospective authors and the editorial board.

Explorations Reviewers are recognized by name in the front matter of the journal (printed and PDF) each year. Also, a formal recognition letter will acknowledge your participation as a reviewer for the journal.
