VIDEO: The end of premium coffee? Confronting a billion-dollar fungus

The largest research project of its type for Texas A&M AgriLife aims to reconstruct a Central American coffee industry still recovering from the coffee rust disease epidemic that devastated the region to the tune of $1 billion in the harvest season of late 2012 alone. Through funding from the global coffee industry and USAID, Texas A&M University System’s World Coffee Research in the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture aim  to provide farmers in the affected regions with quality, high yielding, rust-resistant coffee varieties that will secure their livelihoods for the long term.
