Calibration of Linguistic Amplifiers for Labeled Magnitude Response Scales in Chinese and Farsi

Overview

We intend to calibrate the magnitudes of four sets of linguistic amplifiers in Chinese and Farsi. Volunteers must be a native speakers of one of these. The calibrated amplifiers will be used in subsequent studies to construct questionnaire response continua for labeled magnitude scales (LMS). This study, followed by future validity studies, will yield measures of immediate experiences that are usable by researchers and managers with approximately 1/3 of the world’s population. The linguistic amplifiers to be calibrated follow: 

1. Amplifiers of Intensity: Not at all, Slightly, Somewhat, Quite, Very, Greatly, As Much as Possible
2. Amplifiers of Evaluation: Very poor, So-So, Satisfactory, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Absolutely Perfect
3. Amplifiers of Impacts: None, Negligible, Moderate, Substantial, Significant, Profound, Transformative, As Much as Possible
4. Amplifiers of Agreement: Disagree, Somewhat Disagree, Somewhat Agree, Agree, Strongly Agree, Greatest Possible Agreement

Labeled magnitude scales position linguistic amplifiers at empirically determined distances along continua. We will validate the magnitude of each amplifier by calibrating the magnitude of each amplifier two modalities: hand grip squeeze pressure and decibels of brown noise.
