Funding

Texas A&M researchers may pursue external research funding from a variety of sources—state and federal government agencies, non-profit organizations, and corporations. In addition, the university provides internal grants to inspire interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaborations to advance groundbreaking research.

Federal Funding

U.S. government agencies invest in university-level research to advance knowledge, encourage innovation and address national priorities through grants, contracts or agreements. These agencies include:

As the largest public funder of biomedical research in the world, The NIH invests most of its nearly $48 billion budget in medical research seeking to enhance life and to reduce illness and disability. NIH-funded research has led to breakthroughs and new treatments helping people live longer, healthier lives.

The NSF offers hundreds of funding opportunities — including grants, cooperative agreements and fellowships — that support research and education across science and engineering. Its investments account for about 25% of federal support for basic research.

The DOE delivers scientific discoveries and major scientific tools to transform the understanding of nature and advance the energy, economic and national security of the United States. It is the nation’s largest federal sponsor of basic research in the physical sciences and a major supporter in physics, materials science, computing and chemistry.

The NEA offers a wide range of funding opportunities to strengthen the nation’s arts and cultural ecosystem. Grants support arts projects across various disciplines, as well as research studies that explore the value and impact of the arts, both individually and in relation to other aspects of American life.

External Private Foundations

Foundations support university research by providing grants, fellowships and other funding for infrastructure, pilot projects and collaborative initiatives. They support both basic and applied research, aiming to address global challenges and drive innovation.
