Attentional Bias, Counterfactual Thinking, and Protective Behavioral Strategies

Overview

During Session 1, participants will complete surveys and provide a saliva sample that will be used to identify cotinine levels. Then, participants will complete computerized tasks which involve identifying simple colored stimuli (e.g., circles and squares) using button responses on the keyboard or on a gamepad. Their eyes will be tracked throughout the task and they may occasionally experience mild electric shock on the forearm during the study. There will be regular short breaks throughout the task. 

During Session 2, participants will complete surveys and provide a saliva sample that will be used to identify cotinine levels.

Participants must meet the following inclusion and exclusion criteria —

1. You are between the ages of 18 and 50, inclusive

2. You speak English

3. You have normal or corrected-to-normal (glasses or contacts) visual acuity

4. You have normal color vision

5. You do not have a cardiac device, cardiac pacemaker, implanted electronic medical device, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, or photosensitive epilepsy.

6. You have used an electronic nicotine delivery system (e.g., e-cigarette, Juul, vape pen, puff bar) multiple times per day on most days over the past 6 months7. You have not smoked 2 hours prior to your study appointment
